                                         The sea is calm to-night.                                                                          

바다는 오늘밤 고요하구나. 
                                         The tide is full, the moon lies fair                         
                                         조수는 가득차고, 달은 아름답게 해협 
                                         Upon the straits;-on the French coast the light    
                                         위에 누워있다. 저 프랑스해안엔 등불이 

                                         Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
                                         반짝이고, 사라진다;영국절벽들은 희미하게 
                                         Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.       
                                         빛나며 거대하게 조용한 만에 솟아있다. 
                                         Come to the window, sweet is the night air!      
                                         창가로 오라, 밤 공기가 향기롭다. 
                                         only, from the long line of spray                      
                                         다만, 바다가 달빛으로 하얗게 된 땅을 
                                         Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
                                         만나는 곳에서, 긴 물보라의 선으로부터 
                                         Listen! you hear the grating roar                        
                                         들어봐라! 물결이 물러나갔다 다시 들이칠때 
                                         Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,

                                         At their return, up the high strand,                      
                                         떨리는 느릿한 억양으로 
                                         Begin, and cease, and then again begin,          
                                         시작했다가 그치고 이어 또다시 시작하는 
                                         With tremulous cadence slow, and bring           
                                         그리하여 슬픔의 영원한 곡조를 전하는 것을 
                                         The eternal note of sadness in.

                                         옛날에 소포클레스는 
                                         Heard it on Aegaean, and it brought

                                       The Sea of Faith                                          

                                       신앙의 바다도 
                                       Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
                                       한 때 만조되어 이 지구 해변 둘레에 
                                       Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.      
                                       접어놓은 찬란한 허리띠 처럼 누워있었다.

                                       But now I only hear                                      
                                       그러나 내가 듣는 것은 다만 
                                       Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,        
                                       밤바람 숨결에 몰려 
                                       Retreating, to the breath                               
                                       광막한 지구의 끝으로 
                                       Of the night wind, down the vast edges drear 
                                       지구의 벌거벚은 자갈 위로 물러가는 
                                       And naked singles of the world.                   
                                       우울하고 긴 파도 


                                       Ah, love, let us be true                                   
                                       아 , 사랑아 진실하자. 
                                       To one another! for the world, which seems  
                                       우리도 서로! 이 세상은 꿈나라와도 같이 
                                       To lie before us like a land of dreams,         
                                       변화 많고 아름답고 새롭게 보이지만 
                                       So various, so beautiful, so new,                 
                                       사실은 기쁨도 사랑도 광명도 없고 
                                       Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,     
                                       신념도 평화도 없고 고통을 면할 길 없나니 

                                       Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;  
                                       그리고 우리들이 서 있는 이 세상은 
                                       And we are here as on a darkling plain        
                                       밤에 무지한 군대들이 충돌하는 곳 

                                       Swept with confused alarms of struggled and flight
                                       싸움과 도주의 혼란한 아우성에 휩쓸리는 

                                       Where ignorant armies clash by night.          
                                       어두운 광야와도 같다.
